Oh, come to my heart, Lord Jesus! There is room in my heart for Thee.
Oh, come to my heart, Lord Jesus, come! There is room in my heart for Thee.
(Hymn 238, chorus)
As great crowds gathered around Lord Jesus, He spoke to them in a parable: “A sower went out to sow his seed…” (Lk 8:5). The point of Jesus’ parable was to remind His followers to examine their own hearts first. With what type of heart did they come to hear God’s words?
While it is doubtless that the word of God carries life-transforming power, the attitude with which we decide to hear will undeniably determine our results. Many times, our hearts are just like the wayside–we do not feel God or want to draw close to Him because there is no room in our hearts for Him!
Lord Jesus said that Satan seizes opportunities to snatch the seed from the ground for fear that that person would hear, believe, and be saved. Evidently, when we hear the word with faith, the word can change us, purify us, and thereby save us. It guides our hearts into the mind of Christ.
Therefore, let us not allow for the soil of our hearts to be hard-packed, nor to be cluttered with rocks, causing our faith to wither away in times of scorching heat. Let us not allow for the cares, riches, and pleasures of this life to choke the budding fruit of our spiritual lives. Hear the word; hold fast to it with an honest and good heart, and bear fruit with patience.
“Therefore take heed how you hear. For whoever has, to him more will be given; and whoever does not have, even what he seems to have will be taken from him.” (Lk 8:18)
