He Is Exalted with a Name above Every Name

Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. (Philippians 2:9-11)

The exaltation of Jesus reached its climax in the lordship of Christ. At the name of Jesus, every knee should bow and every tongue should confess that He is Lord to the glory of God the Father. His was the hard way to glory — through His death on the cross and resurrection. However, in due time, God has highly exalted Him to the highest place, the place that He deserved as God’s equal, and to the position in which He is publicly proclaimed before heaven and earth.

Bear Your Name

In Solomon’s prayer for the temple dedication, he mentioned ‘Your name’ eight times. I was amazed that Solomon kept repeating this phrase. It had to carry much weight. What is God’s name? Today we all know that Jesus is God’s name. But this name, Jesus, was not revealed until the New Testament (Lk 1:31). This name, Jesus, is inherited (Heb 1:4). So it implies that Jesus is also the Father’s name, but God did not reveal His true name to the forefathers and prophets in the Old Testament time. Regardless, God’s holy name is to be revered by His people at all times. “Blessed be the name of the Lord” (Job 1:21). Jesus also taught us in the Lord’s Prayer, “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name.” Continue reading
