He Is Sovereign

“Which he will display at the proper time–he who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords.” (1Tim 6:15 ESV)

Jesus Christ is sovereign. His birth, life, death, resurrection, and ascension prove that He is the King of kings and Lord of lords. He shoulders the responsibility of governing the people, and His rule extends into human hearts. The titles He bears characterize this new kingdom of Jesus’ dominion. He will be called “Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace”.

“For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” (Isa 9:6)

Jesus is the Wonderful Counselor. He brings consolation through the power and love in His own life but also today through the Holy Spirit, who is called the Counselor in John 14:26. The Holy Spirit teaches us and reminds us of all the works and wonders of God. His comfort and counsel bring joy and peace in turmoil.

Jesus is the Mighty God. Jesus’ mighty power is evident. The four Gospel books are filled with many miracles and wonders that Jesus performed. We can experience His power too. We can have the confidence that if God begins a good work in us, then He will complete this work. Thus, we can aspire to serve Him even beyond our own capabilities and talents, for God bestows good gifts on His people. We will experience joy and fulfillment in serving the Lord because the outcome of holy work is under God’s control, not ours.

Jesus is the Everlasting Father. God loves all mankind as parents love their own children. As a father pities his children, so the Lord pities those who fear Him (Ps 103:13). If we acknowledge Jesus as our heavenly Father, He will lead us through our days on earth. We should plead with Him to dwell in our hearts so that He truly becomes the Father in our lives. The love of the Lord Jesus Christ will certainly make a great difference in our lives.

Jesus is the Prince of Peace. He made peace by the blood of His cross and reconciled men and God. He broke down barriers between men. Jesus often spoke about forgiveness. If we repay evil for evil, it hurts us just as much as it hurts our opponents. Forgiving will free us from a heavy load of bitterness and bring us the peace that Jesus promised.

Jesus is sovereign. His rule is personal, persistent, and eternal. We can learn the characteristics of His sovereignty by His names.
