“You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.” (Mt 5:14)
As the light of the world, Jesus brings light to mankind. We are children of light. We ought to let Jesus’ light shine through us. As a lamp gives light to everyone around it, we are to manifest God’s truth and goodness to the people around us. Being sanctified by God’s words, living a clean life, bearing the fruit of the Spirit, and having good deeds that show love for people are ways to reflect God’s goodness.
The ultimate purpose of religious belief is to allow people to experience the presence of God and to walk with Him in the light. We should let our light shine because one day, our light may lead someone out of the darkness. Thus, let us not only shine the blessed gospel light but also brighten the corner wherever we are.
The lyrics of the hymn “Brighten the Corner Where You Are” remind us that we should not wait until some deed of greatness we may do, but be true to the many duties near us now. There are many wonderful ways that God can use us to brighten someone else’s life in moments when they need a lift of love. We should keep practising kindness because one day, our kindness may lead someone out of despair.
We are sons of light. We need to preach the gospel, proclaim the truth, and point people to God. Even from our humble hands, the bread of life may feed. As a lamp stands at the street corner, it brightens the corner and lights the path for those passing by. We can share our own experiences with God through witnessing or in writing. Our testimony can edify other believers, guide truth seekers, and move people to think about how God has touched their own lives. As we shine our light, we illuminate the path to God and direct others towards Him.
God is love. Love is the fruit of the Holy Spirit. Love is demonstrated in helping others. Apostle Paul encourages us to have good deeds and to bear the fruit of Spirit so that we may reflect God’s goodness. The spiritual product of walking in the light is the fruit of the Spirit. Let us not grow weary in the work of love but continue to let our light shine.
