“Out of the depths I have cried to You, LORD.” (Psalm 130:1)
Life often brings burdens that weigh heavily upon the heart. Feelings of sorrow, fear, guilt, anger, loneliness, and regret can quietly overwhelm us. At times, these emotions may leave us discouraged and spiritually weary. Scripture reminds us that when we are in the depths, we can still cry out to the Lord, knowing He hears us.
The hymn “Jesus, I Come” beautifully expresses this truth. With honesty and humility, it speaks of a soul longing to leave behind darkness, bondage, shame, and striving in order to find rest in Christ. Each verse begins with the words “Out of…” — out of fear, out of sorrow, out of self — and leads to the simple but powerful response: “Jesus, I come to Thee.”
What makes this hymn so meaningful is its reminder that faith does not begin with strength, but with surrender. Jesus does not ask us to hide our burdens or pretend we are whole. Instead, He invites us to come to Him just as we are. No failure is too great, no wound too deep, and no burden too heavy to bring before Him.
As we meditate on the words of this hymn, we are reminded that true peace is found not in ourselves, but in Christ alone. He offers forgiveness for our sins, comfort for our sorrows, and freedom for weary souls. His grace welcomes all who come with humble and repentant hearts.
Today, whatever burden you may be carrying, bring it to Jesus. In every moment of weakness, fear, or uncertainty, may your heart echo the hymn’s simple prayer: “Jesus, I come.”
