“He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His name's sake.” (Ps 23:3, NKJV)
We live in a time when many people are uncertain about their future. Companies are laying off employees, experienced workers are searching for new opportunities, and many recent graduates are discovering that earning a degree does not guarantee a job. Behind these realities are people carrying anxiety, disappointment, and questions: “What will happen to me? How will I provide for my family? Where is God leading me?”
It is in such moments that the hymn “He Leadeth Me” offers profound comfort:
“He leadeth me, O blessed thought!
O words with heavenly comfort fraught!”
The hymn reminds us that God’s leading does not mean we will always understand where He is taking us. It means that we do not walk alone.
When we lose a job, we may feel that we have also lost our security, purpose, or identity. But our employment does not determine our worth. Before we had a job, a degree, or a career, we were already known and loved by God. A resume describes our experience, but it does not define our value.
Psalm 23 reminds us that God is our Shepherd. A shepherd does not always reveal the entire journey to the sheep. He leads them one step at a time. Likewise, we may not know where the next opportunity will come from, when the next interview will happen, or what our career will look like six months from now. But we can trust the One who sees the entire path.
For those who have been laid off, do not mistake a closed door for the end of your story. For recent graduates, do not assume that a delayed beginning means a failed future. Continue to apply, learn, network, seek wise counsel, and work faithfully, but also remember to trust God while you wait.
Perhaps our prayer should not only be, “Lord, give me a job,” but also, “Lord, lead me.”
Lead me when the door opens and when it closes. Lead me when I understand and when I do not. Lead me when I am confident and when I am afraid. The future may be uncertain, but God’s presence is not.
So today, whatever our employment situation may be, let us hold on to the blessed thought: He leadeth me.
