Sound the Battle Cry

"Joshua said to the people, 'Shout! For the LORD has given you the city!'" (Josh 6:16b)

The hymn “Sound the Battle Cry” reminds us that the Christian life is a call to spiritual vigilance, courage, and steadfast faith. Like Joshua and the Israelites at Jericho, we are called to move forward in obedience, trusting not in our own strength but in the power and promises of God.

Joshua’s command to shout came before the walls fell. The people obeyed because they believed God’s promise. Their victory was not achieved by military might or human strategy, but by faith-filled obedience to the Lord. Likewise, the battles we face today are primarily spiritual. We contend with temptation, fear, discouragement, and the constant pull of worldly values. Yet God calls us to stand firm under His banner, resisting not people, but everything that opposes His truth, righteousness, and holiness.

Because He Lives, I Can Face Tomorrow

We live in a time marked by rapid change and uncertainty. The rise of Artificial Intelligence, ongoing global tensions, and shifting policies have made volatility feel like the new normal. Many wonder what the future holds: what work will look like, which skills will matter, and how to prepare for what lies ahead.

In such a world, life can feel like a battlefield. Scripture does not shy away from this reality. Instead, it reminds us that while life involves struggle, it is also a place where victory is possible. In the letters to the seven churches in Revelation, the call to be “victorious” appears again and again—a quiet but steady assurance that overcoming adversity is not only necessary, but attainable through Christ.

Faith Is the Victory

“For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.” (1 Jn 5:4)

Being laid off is a reality many face. The fear of losing a job is a common threat, especially for older workers. Older employees are often among the first to be downsized and tend to remain unemployed longer. After receiving my layoff notice, I prayed and felt assured that God would help me. However, God’s promise did not exempt me from putting in the effort to acquire the skills required for the job market.

Upholding the Banner of Victory

You have given a banner to those who fear You, that it may be displayed because of the truth. (Ps 60:4)

In ancient and modern warfare, banners and flags symbolize unity and strength of purpose. As Christian soldiers, we need to march on and uphold the banner that the Lord has bestowed upon us. In the battlefield, the banner supports the fighting morale and gives the hope of triumph. In our ministry, our Lord Jesus Christ is the banner which sustains our faith.

After the Israelites fought their very first battle against the Amalekites at Rephidim after they had crossed the Red Sea, Moses built an altar and called its name, The-Lord-Is-My-Banner (Ex 17:15). The name Moses gave the altar reminded the people that the Lord was responsible for their victories. The word “banner” means “sign”. Put together, we may understand this victory as a sign for the Israelites that God was truly with them. Continue reading →
